John Banghart Senior Director for Cybersecurity Services of Venable LLP John Banghart leverages his significant federal government and private sector experience in cybersecurity to navigate issues related to risk management, government policy, standards and regulatory compliance, and incident management. He has successfully led efforts to address significant and high-profile cybersecurity issues within major government programs and institutions while facing complex legal, technical, and political circumstances. From 2013 to 2015, John played a key role in developing the Obama administration's cybersecurity and technology policy as the National Security Council's director for federal cybersecurity. He led policy, technical, and process efforts to reduce cybersecurity risk and improve metrics and measurement for all civilian, military, and intelligence community agencies. He served as a primary advisor on cybersecurity incidents and preparedness and led the National Security Council’s efforts to address significant cybersecurity incidents, including those at OPM and the White House, among others. He also spent several years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), both as a cybersecurity researcher and in the Office of the Undersecretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology. John also worked as a senior cybersecurity advisor for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, providing leadership to the cybersecurity preparations for the Healthcare.gov website. Prior to joining Venable, John was the senior director for Trusted Engineering for Microsoft. In this position, he coordinated multiple teams to develop, implement, and oversee strategy for government adoption of Microsoft’s Azure cloud services. Part of the implementation involved meeting strict federal and Defense Department compliance requirements. Early in his career, John was a technology leader at several private sector companies, including, Booz Allen Hamilton and the Center for Internet Security.

Alexander Botting Senior Director Global Security and Technology Strategy of Venable LLP Alexander Botting has extensive experience in international policy, having executed advocacy campaigns on technology policy issues in more than 50 countries, spanning five continents. He most recently served as director for global regulatory cooperation at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where he led initiatives in the areas of cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and regulatory cooperation. During his tenure at the Chamber, Alexander launched its global cybersecurity and law enforcement access initiatives, championing an enabling policy environment for trade and the digital economy on behalf of several dozen member companies. He also provided guidance to senior Chamber and member company executives on technology policy issues, while managing relationships with officials in the White House, Department of Commerce, Department of State, and Office of the United States Trade Representative. Before joining the Chamber, Alexander spent two years in Chicago as a consultant at a leading provider for global business intelligence and strategic market analysis, where he worked with a range of Fortune 500 companies to create international expansion and product development strategies. Prior to that, Alexander worked for three years at a government affairs firm in Washington, DC, where he served as the director of international affairs. He advocated for client interests within multilateral institutions and through direct engagement with both U.S. and foreign government officials. Alexander has written op-eds on a range of international issues and has been a featured speaker at the United Nations Group of Governmental Experts Regional Consultation, APEC Senior Officials Meeting, as well as events in Brussels, London, Washington, Singapore, Tokyo, and Brasilia.

Adam Dobell Director Global Security and Technology Strategy of Venable LLP Adam Dobell has extensive experience in national security and international policy, principally in the Indo-Pacific. Prior to joining Venable, Adam served as the first secretary for the department of home affairs at the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC, where he engaged with officials at the White House and congressional and industry stakeholders to further Australia’s national security interests. He also represented the Australian Government in multilateral groupings including the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, the International Counter Ransomware Initiative, and the Quad. During his tenure serving the Australian Department of Home Affairs, Adam provided guidance on policy issues at the nexus of homeland security, technology, and cybersecurity, including critical infrastructure protection, countering violent extremism, lawful access to encrypted data, and telecommunications security. He also advised senior departmental officials on international strategy as an Executive Officer. Prior to his service in the Department of Home Affairs, Adam worked for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection as an assistant director for the Pacific and Transnational Issues Branch, managing engagement on national security and border security policy with governments in the Pacific. Adam has been a featured speaker on the Cybersecurity of Critical Infrastructure at APEC Senior Officials Meetings and at DEFCON.
